Sonoran Science Academy Receives Imagination Playground

Sonoran Science Academy Davis-Monthan’s life sciences teacher, Ms. Tori Hanson, got a huge surprise last month when she was notified that the grant she had applied for was not only successful but that the award was one of just ten such awards made nationwide by the CarMax Foundation and KaBOOM!

The “Grand Reveal” of the Imagination Playground play equipment was held today as part of the Car Max/KaBOOM ‘Week of Play’, as a celebration of their partnership with communities to make play more accessible to children of veterans and of military families.

The “Grand Reveal” saw base and Tucson community members come together in support of students. Loraine K. Goody, MSgt, USAF, from the Airman and Family Readiness Center, the Military Family Life Counselor, and Chaplain Meyers represented DMAFB. Dr. Bryan Foulk, a member of the DM-50 group, and Edgar Martinez, from the Tucson Metro Chamber, spoke on behalf of the wider community.

James P. Lewis, General Manager of CarMax Tucson, representing the CarMax Foundation and the KaBOOM! Partnership, spoke about the importance of play, particularly for children of military families. “We understand the emotional impact many kids experience when a parent is deployed or has returned home from military service and are committed to providing community support to these families so their kids and their peers can experience the childhood they deserve”, he said.

School Principal, Ms. Peggy Fontenot, commented, “We are very grateful to CarMax and KaBOOM for recognizing that the children of military families face unique stresses and that play is an important release and opportunity to just have fun. We also very much appreciate the support we have from everyone on the base and we are proud to serve military families”.

The CarMax Foundation is designed to enrich the communities where CarMax associates live and work and has donated more than $35 million since 2003. Funding programs are made available through a portion of CarMax, Inc.’s pre-tax profits.
