Student Council Meets with Senator Bradley

On Friday, January 25, 2017, Arizona Senator David Bradley visited Sonoran Science Academy – Broadway and was interviewed by the Student Council. President Hunter Saltzberry, Vice President Chloe Davison, and Chief Science Officer Amina Didan got together to meet with Arizona Senator David Bradley to talk about what School Choice means to him.

We asked him questions like “Why is school choice important? Why is he a legislator? What are your proudest achievements as a legislator? What are your biggest challenges?” We also asked him more personal questions like, “How do you manage your time and commitments? What advice would you give to students in terms of serving their environment?”

The Senator told us that what School Choice means to him is that kids should be able to succeed in many different types of environments. He said that his dad ran for the legislature and lost by ten votes. That gave incentive to Senator Bradley to try to become a legislator. The Senator said that he ran twice and lost and finally won on his third try. He also told us that his proudest achievements were getting insurance for kids who can’t afford it and getting two important bills written and passed. One bill was the anti-bullying bill.

Senator Bradley encourages students to pay attention to younger kids as they look up to them as role models. He also said that the way we treat others impacts how others treat one another. One more thing the Senator mentioned was to make the people around you comfortable. He said if you see someone upset, ask them what is wrong but don’t keep asking if they don’t want to tell you.

He said that one of his biggest challenges was getting enough money to send dentists to schools as tooth decay and dental problems are a very big reason that kids don’t go to school. He also mentioned that tooth decay is contagious and nobody should use other’s toothbrush!

Senator Bradley manages his time depending on the day as he is very busy dealing with issues, from bug spray to a college professor concerned about 14,000 students, and much more. On his weekends, he mostly hangs out with his family and the week starts over again. His work day is busy and varied as he is one of just thirty Senators representing everyone in Arizona.

In the meeting with Senator Bradley we asked many questions and we learned a lot. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to finish asking all of our questions because he had to attend another meeting so we hope he will visit us again soon!

Chloe Davison, Student Council Vice President
