Governor Ducey visits Tucson campus

Governor Ducey visited Sonoran Science Academy in Tucson, AZ on August 21, 2017 as part of his 3rd Annual Back to School Tour.  He began his visit in the courtyard, where he was greeted by students from Ms. Boosamra’s American Sign Language course, who 'sang' the National Anthem for him in ASL. Next, the Governor visited Ms. Aichu’s Exploring Engineering Through Robotics class, where students walked him through the technical challenges of their electronic curtain and  elevator projects.  Students then demonstrated a robot that they had programmed to write and the Governor had an opportunity to enter a random word for the robot to write.
The Governor’s tour saw him visit the Journalism classroom next, where students interviewed the Governor in a mock press conference.  The Governor answered their questions about life in the Capitol, and gave career advice for college bound students.  In the Art Room, Advanced Art student Joseph Zelinka presented the Governor with a charcoal portrait and the Governor chatted with students about the class and the challenges of drawing real-life subjects. On the soccer field, the Governor joined 6th grade students viewing the spectacular solar eclipse.

He concluded his tour by visiting with Arizona's only World Championship Robotics Team, CRUSH 1011.  He operated a machine in the Robotics Room before heading outside, where students had set up a practice competition field, and the Governor got to drive robot, “Perry”. Before leaving the campus, the Governor commemorated his visit by signing a print of the SSA logo and telling administrators how impressed he was with the school, the students, and the faculty.
Principal Doyuran was thrilled by the visit and was delighted that the Governor recognized students and staff.  “We are so honored by the Governor’s visit. Since 2003, we have consistently been rated an excelling school. We attracted the attention of the Governor because of our focus on STEM, the great teachers at our school, our partnership with parents, and students who come to school each day wanting to learn. It is that commitment of all stakeholders that supports our focus on STEM education and college and career readiness and makes us successful.
