A Message from Principal James Satterlee

Welcome! I have been a part of Sonoran Schools as a teacher, dean of students, and principal for nine years. I am an Arizona native who grew up in central Phoenix. It is my passion and goal to serve the community in which I grew up.

We are a K-12 STEM-focused school with talented and caring teachers, supportive staff, and amazing coaches. We have student clubs and high school sports teams. We participate in regional and state academic competitions and embrace our mission statement in everything we do.

I am delighted that you are interested in our school. If you have any questions, please email us at: phoenix@sonoranschools.org.
For any individual who cannot submit an online application due to a disability, Sonoran Schools accepts paper applications. Please contact the school to receive a paper application.
Sonoran Schools will ensure that a homeless child or youth is able to enroll in school immediately regardless of their ability to provide the proper documentation for enrollment by following the requirements of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. Please contact the school in which you wish to enroll/wish to enroll your child.

This school is a Title I school and participates in the National School Lunch Program.
The following provides brief information on frequently asked questions about enrollment.
All Sonoran Schools are public schools, sponsored by the Arizona State Board of Charter Schools and open to all students in Arizona who qualify to attend public schools, subject to available capacity. Sonoran Schools will admit all students, on a space-available basis, will not charge tuition, and will not discriminate on the basis of ethnicity, national origin, gender, income level, disabling condition, proficiency in the English language, athletic ability, or any other status or characteristic prohibited by state or federal law.
Sonoran Schools enrolls year-round during each school year, assuming that space is available at the desired school and applicable grade level. Sonoran Schools holds Open Enrollment for prosepctive students for the next school year at a specified time each year.
Open Enrollment
Open Enrollment is the period prior to the start of the next school year when any parent/guardian can submit an application for their child for the upcoming school year. Applications received after the Open Enrollment period are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Open Enrollment period for the 2019-2020 school year is October 5th, 2018 through January 11th, 2019. This does not mean that we do not accept applications after that period. It just means that any applications we receive after that period are processed on a first-come, first served  basis.

Level of Priority for incoming students
Re-enrolling students and their siblings (if any) are given first priority for the seats available for the following year. Pursuant to A.R.S. 15-184, the School will also give enrollment preference to the sibling(s) of students selected through the lottery; the children or grandchildren of faculty, staff, or governing board members of any Sonoran School; siblings of current students at another Sonoran school; and students who previously attended another Sonoran school.

At the conclusion of the Open Enrollment period, a random selection lottery shall be held for seats in any grade level where the number of openings available for the next school year is less than the number of applications received for that grade level during the Open Enrollment period, taking into consideration the statutory enrollment priorities. The students selected by lottery will be notified by email, phone, or mail. The 2019-2020 lottery will be held on January 15th, 2019.

Waiting Lists
A waiting list will be created once all available slots at a specific school and grade level have been filled (and the lotteries, if needed, have already taken place). A student's placement on the waiting list will be based on date/time of receipt of a complete application packet.
Age requirements
Incoming Kindergartners must be 5 years old by September 1st of the year that they are entering. As allowed by state law, we conditionally accept children with late birthdays (Sept. 1-Dec. 31 ONLY), based on a child’s readiness to attend school. In order to assist the School with determining whether early enrollment into kindergarten is in the child’s best interests, Sonoran Schools requires the child participate in Kindergarten Readiness Testing. Sonoran Schools utilizes the Brigance© Early Childhood Screen III (Brigance A. H., 2013) to assist in predicting the success of a student seeking early entrance to kindergarten.  The determination regarding whether early enrollment is in a child’s best interests shall be within Sonoran School’s sole discretion.

1st graders must be 6 years old by September 1st of the year that they are enrolling. As allowed by state law, we conditionally accept children with late birthdays (Sept. 1-Dec. 31 ONLY), based on the child’s readiness to attend school and whether early admission is in the child’s best interests.  In making that determination, which shall be within Sonoran School’s sole discretion, the School shall consult with the parents, child, teachers and school administration.

All Sonoran Schools require students to wear uniforms; they are available for purchase online at www.sonoranschoolstore.com
